WASHINGTON DC - In a decisive win for election integrity, the House today passed H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act – landmark legislation ensuring only U.S. citizens participate in our elections. This historic bill delivers on House Republicans' promise to secure America's ballot box and restore voter confidence nationwide. American elections should be decided by American citizens - a principle that the SAVE Act firmly establishes through common-sense verification measures. By requiring states to update their election laws and confirm proof of citizenship for all voters, the SAVE Act addresses a critical vulnerability in our electoral process. The SAVE Act represents a vital first step toward restoring the integrity of our elections and reaffirming the democratic foundations on which our nation was built. Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21), lead sponsor of the SAVE Act: "Despite the ridiculous attacks and purposeful misinformation spread about the bill, I am pleased to see that the House of Representatives once again passed the SAVE Act on a bipartisan basis to ensure only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections. I would like to thank Speaker Johnson, Chairman Steil, and Senator Mike Lee for partnering with me on this effort. In order to preserve this republic, we must uphold what it means to be able to vote in a U.S. election. I am grateful that my colleagues answered the call and passed the SAVE Act, as this serves as a critical first step to ensure that we maintain election integrity throughout our country. It is now up to the Senate to take up, pass, and send this important bill to President Trump’s desk." Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11): “Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy, and protecting them from foreign influence is non-negotiable. It's common sense that only American citizens should vote in our elections. You need ID to board a plane or open a bank account—voting deserves the same standard. I applaud RSC member Rep. Chip Roy on leading the charge to get this over the finish line. House Republicans and President Trump are delivering on our promise to restore election integrity, now it's up to the Senate to swiftly pass this crucial bill.” |
