Congress' Largest Caucus Backs Trump to Defeat UN's Global Carbon Tax
The IMO's proposed framework would have increased global shipping costs by 10% or more, advantaged Chinese shipyards, and hit American consumers directly. President Trump's swift response made clear that unelected international bureaucrats will not impose taxes on American citizens, and the UN backed down. RSC leaders signaled House Republicans are preparing next steps to permanently block the scheme:
"The United States cannot afford another UN agreement that harms the interests of our country. The net-zero framework, a de facto global carbon tax, would have been a flagrant overstep in its attempt to impose taxes on American citizens and companies. If finalized, the proposal would have devastated American energy workers, spiked consumer costs, and handed China a competitive advantage in global shipping – all while undermining our domestic supply chains and financial security. We are thankful to President Trump and Secretaries Rubio, Wright, and Duffy for putting pressure on the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which ultimately led to the IMO's decision to postpone the vote to adopt this global carbon tax. Make no mistake: we will fight this scheme at every turn, and we will not allow unelected international bureaucrats to tax the American people."
