Democrats' Ghoulish Government Shutdown Leaves Millions Without Food Benefits
WASHINGTON, D.C. — While families prepare for trick-or-treating, a far more frightening reality awaits 42 million Americans tomorrow. As of November 1st, SNAP benefits—the primary source of food assistance for millions of families—will cease due to the ongoing government shutdown now in its 31st day.
Hundreds of thousands of children, seniors, and working families will wake up Saturday morning with no way to put food on the table. Democrats have voted 14 times against reopening the government and restoring funding, choosing political theater over feeding hungry Americans. The real horror isn't found in haunted houses this Halloween—it's found in the grocery aisles across the country.
Republican Study Committee (RSC) members are calling on Democrats to end the shutdown immediately and restore critical funding for American families:
"3.5 million Texans will stop receiving SNAP benefits tomorrow because the Left refuses to quit the political games and reopen the government. Democrats have openly admitted that they are using the American people for political leverage, and struggling families are now paying the price. I voted to fund the government, including SNAP, to avoid this very situation. It's time for the theatrics to end and for Senate Democrats to do the right thing,"said RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11).
"More than 130,000 Iowa households on SNAP and 60,000 moms and kids who rely on WIC are at risk today because Senate Democrats continue to use hungry Iowans as leverage. This is not a political game. I've met with the food bank volunteers who are bracing for empty shelves—and the families who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The House voted to keep food assistance funded. It’s time the Senate does its job,” said Rep. Zach Nunn (IA-03).
"Because of Senate Democrats refusal to do their jobs and fund the government, 42 million Americans, including 1.4 million Georgians, will no longer have access to their SNAP benefits. The Democrat party’s calculated government shutdown is intended to inflict pain on Americans and use that pain as leverage. It is wrong and it must come to an end," said Rep. Austin Scott (GA-08).
“Democrats have voted fourteen times to keep the government shut down and stop funding for SNAP. To every one of their constituents who is upset right now, Chuck Schumer and his party are the ones responsible,” said Rep. Mark Harris (NC-08).
