Half a Century of Hyde: Millions of Lives Saved and the Pro-Family Agenda Moving Forward

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On September 30, 1976, Congress passed the Hyde Amendment, prohibiting taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortion and saving the lives of over 2 million unborn American children. For fifty years, the Hyde Amendment has upheld the principle that Americans should not be forced to pay for abortions in violation of their beliefs. In the past, Democrats and Republicans have come together to ensure this critical safeguard is included in appropriations bills and government programs.

However, as radical Socialist ideas overshadow common sense among Democrats, bipartisan support for Hyde has diminished. Democrats now promote policies that put women at risk, encourage brutality towards children, and fuel the ongoing mental health crisis. In contrast, the Trump administration and Republican Study Committee (RSC) Members are upholding the legacy of the Hyde Amendment by advancing legislation that supports American families, respects Americans’ individual beliefs, and expands opportunities for the next generation.

Here’s what RSC Members had to say about the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment:

“Fifty years ago—on September 30th, 1976—Congress first enacted an amendment offered by the late, great Congressman Henry Hyde of Illinois to prohibit federal Medicaid funds from being used to subsidize the killing of unborn children by abortion. I had the honor of serving alongside Rep. Hyde in the House for more than two decades, and I can personally attest to his unrivaled brilliance, unparalleled compassion, and unwavering commitment to protecting and defending the rights of the unborn—the weakest and most vulnerable among us. Today, we celebrate Congressman Hyde’s incredible, lasting legacy, and we honor his critical 1976 amendment, which, to date, has saved the lives of nearly 2.7 million people. As he once said during debate, ‘The promise of America is that life is not just for the privileged, the planned, or the perfect.’ With gratitude for Henry Hyde’s legacy, we renew the call to protect the unborn, support and empower pregnant women, and hold abortionists accountable for the immense violence and cruelty they commit every single day,” said Rep. “For 50 years, the Hyde Amendment has reflected a simple principle that Americans should not be forced to fund abortion with their tax dollars. Born of the conviction of Henry Hyde, this policy has endured across administrations and Congresses of both parties, and it has helped protect millions of unborn children. I'm proud to stand with those who defend it and renew our full commitment to protect the sanctity of life,” said RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11).

“For 50 years, the Hyde Amendment has protected Americans from funding deadly procedures that should be illegal in the first place. Congress must keep building on the legacy of the Hyde Amendment by eliminating the tax-exempt status of organizations that perform or fund abortions. Taxpayers should never be forced to subsidize these barbaric procedures,” said RSC Article One Task Force Chair Rep. Harriet Hageman (WY-AL).

“For nearly 50 years, the Hyde protections have served two critical purposes: protecting unborn children from abortion and preventing Americans from being forced to fund abortion with their tax dollars. As Chairman of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, I am proud to have worked to uphold strong, longstanding pro‑life language in our appropriations bills. The Hyde Amendment is a cornerstone of that effort, protecting both the lives of unborn children and the consciences of American taxpayers. The Hyde Amendment remains one of the greatest achievements of the pro‑life movement. I am proud to have fought for its inclusion, and I will continue to advocate for the sanctity of human life,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt (AL-04). 

“For 50 years, the Hyde Amendment has reflected the profound sentiment of Americans that federal tax dollars should never be used to promote or fund the barbaric practice referred to as ‘abortion’. Americans are overwhelmingly pro-life, and their will must be respected. Life has always been, and will always be, a precious gift from God. It should never be squandered under any circumstance,” said Rep. Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Rules. 

“Americans should be committed to ending the horrific act of abortion, not funding it. As we reflect on the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, we celebrate the victories gained for our citizens and the unborn, while recognizing there is still more to be done to protect the lives of our most innocent,” said Rep. “The right to life is the first freedom government has a duty to protect. As we mark the Hyde Amendment’s 50th anniversary, I reaffirm my commitment to defending its protections for the unborn and ensuring tax dollars are never used to subsidize abortion,” said Rep. Warren Davidson (OH-08).

“Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has prohibited federal funding for abortion or health coverage that includes abortion, through the Labor, Health and Human Services spending bills. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this protective amendment.  I am thankful for the more than 2 million lives saved. I will always support life,” said Rep. Michael Guest (MS-03).

“Taxpayer dollars should never fund abortion. Fifty years ago, the late Representative Henry Hyde drew a line, and Congress has renewed that protection every year since. The Charlotte Lozier Institute estimates that the Hyde Amendment has saved nearly 2.6 million unborn lives. We cannot stop there. I will continue to fight to preserve Hyde protections in every spending bill, support mothers, and defend the dignity of every unborn child,” said Rep. Keith Self (TX-03).

“For 50 years, the Hyde Amendment has stood as a critical safeguard for life and for taxpayers who should never be forced to fund abortion. Every life is precious and worthy of protection, and I will always stand for the unborn and fight to ensure taxpayer dollars are never used to take an innocent life,” said Rep. Ralph Norman (SC-05).

“The people of East Texas believe in the sanctity of every life and no tax dollars should be used to pay for abortions. The Hyde Amendment has upheld that principle for half a century, and I am proud to stand with everyone who has fought to protect it,” said Rep. Nathaniel Moran (TX-01).

“Henry Hyde’s name should go down in history as one of the greatest champions for human life - every human life. His passion for defending the unborn is what inspired me to work for him as a staffer, and it continues to inspire me today. We should mark the anniversary of his historic, life-saving amendment by enshrining the Hyde Amendment permanently in federal law,” said Rep. Riley Moore (WV-02).

“It is painfully obvious that taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund abortions. On the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, I am grateful that our nation has remained committed to protecting taxpayers from being forced to subsidize abortion, and I will continue to do whatever I can to safeguard life. Life is a blessing that our nation should cherish and protect,” said Rep. Sheri Biggs (SC-03).

“On the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, let us be reminded that there is no greater cause than protecting life and giving a voice to the voiceless. Life is just as precious today as it was in 1976, yet Democrats have shown they’ll use any chance they get to steer American tax dollars toward abortion. That same commonsense principle should guide how we spend family planning dollars, so they go to clinics that value their patients and the unborn. Every life is precious, and ensuring that Americans do not have to unwillingly fund abortions against their beliefs is common sense.
