ICYMI: Rep. Malliotakis: Democrats Killed Reliable Energy in New York, Now Families Are Paying the Price

May 11, 2026
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican Study Committee Member Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) is calling out New York Democrats for shuttering reliable energy sources and driving up costs for hardworking families.

In a recent NY Daily News op-ed, Rep. Malliotakis endorses Secretary Chris Wright’s call for reopening Indian Plant, a nuclear energy facility that operated 24/7 and supplied New York City alone with a quarter of its energy needs. The facility was shuttered under New York Governor Kathy Hochul after a deal brokered by former Governor Andrew Cuomo forced the plant into early retirement.

When Indian Point went offline in 2021, New York turned to increased electricity imports and greater reliance on wind and solar generation. But as Rep. Malliotakis points out, intermittent renewables can't replace baseload power: “Wind turbines only generate electricity when the wind blows. Solar panels only produce power when the sun is shining. On a hot July night or during a February cold snap, that simply is not enough.”

The Congresswoman says the solution is straightforward: “The path ahead is clear. Restore balance to the energy mix. Embrace dependable baseload generation. Work with federal partners committed to grid security. Keep affordability at the center of every energy decision.”
