RSC Delivers Eviction Notice to D.C.'s Crime-Coddling Council

September 2, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Republican Study Committee (RSC) at a press conference today announced its intention to utilize its Article One constitutional authority over the District of Columbia to permanently end the lawlessness that has plagued America's capital city.

The RSC Article One Task Force has identified key areas where Congress must assert its constitutional oversight, including holding D.C. officials accountable for their disastrous crime policies, ensuring transparency in how taxpayer dollars are spent on failed programs, and preventing further erosion of public safety standards. Members emphasized that while President Trump's federal law enforcement efforts have already shown dramatic results in improving safety and order, lasting reform requires Congress to step up and use its constitutional powers to prevent D.C. from sliding back into chaos once federal intervention ends.

The press conference featured over a dozen RSC Members who addressed the justified need for President Trump to use his executive power to restore law and order. Among the attendees were several members of the House Oversight Committee who have jurisdiction over the capital city.

“The RSC’s Article One Task Force was established to restore Congress’s full constitutional authority and advance reforms that reassert a true balance of power in our government. One of those Congressional responsibilities is the duty to govern the District of Columbia and ensure accountability in our nation’s capital,” said Rep. Harriet Hageman (WY-AL). “D.C. local leadership has continuously chosen radical, left-wing policies over public safety and transparency, failing the very citizens they claim to serve. Over the past few weeks, we have seen a drastic drop in crime in D.C. with the help of federal intervention. With President Trump’s leadership and proper Congressional oversight, we will ensure that Washington, D.C. is restored as a safe, strong, and dignified capital worthy of representing the American people.”

"Liberal soft-on-crime policies turned our nation's capital into a dangerous embarrassment, making it unsafe for residents, visitors, and even Members of Congress and staff. That ends now," said RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11). "I commend Congresswoman Hageman's leadership on this issue, and I thank President Trump for his decisive action to restore order. Congress will use our constitutional authority without hesitation. We're making D.C. safe and great again, and we're going to make all of our once-great American cities great again. When local government fails, it's our duty to act. The days of liberal destruction are over."

“The American people deserve a capital city that reflects the very best of this country, not one that turns a blind eye to lawlessness. Thanks to President Trump, together, we are advancing common-sense proposals to restore order in Washington—measures that put victims first, hold violent criminals accountable, and stop the revolving door of repeat offenders who cycle back onto the streets,” said Rep. Laurel Lee (FL-15).

“Our nation’s capital has been run like a disaster for too long, with crime, filth, and chaos everywhere. President Trump took decisive action, and in just two weeks, law and order is restored. Streets are safer, criminals are being held accountable, and the American people are finally seeing leadership they can trust,” said Rep. William Timmons (SC-04).

“America’s streets have been overrun by the consequences of the Biden-Harris administration’s weak, soft-on-crime policies,” said Rep. Buddy Carter (GA-01). “Thanks to President Trump’s bold, America First leadership, we are taking back our streets and making our nation’s capital safe, clean, and prosperous again. Promises made, promises kept.”

"The soft-on-crime policies of Democrats have unfortunately allowed crime to spiral out of control in DC and elsewhere in the country. Rather than applauding the president's efforts to stop it, Democrats’ only response has been to double down on pro-criminal positions, manipulate reporting, and insist Americans shouldn’t believe what they are seeing in their communities with their own eyes. I commend President Trump’s decisive action to make Washington, D.C., safer for its residents and visitors. Regardless of political party, he’s working to protect you from criminals, gangs, and violence. He’s working to make D.C. and America safer for all,” said Rep. Brad Knott (NC-13).
