RSC Members Applaud Passage of the Stop Insider Trading Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House of Representatives passed the Stop Insider Trading Act, which would generally ban Members of Congress, spouses, and dependent children from purchasing publicly traded stocks and require public notice before any sale of existing holdings. The bill also extends the SAVE America Act’s photo ID requirements to protect the integrity of federal elections.

Together, these measures increase transparency, strengthen accountability, and help restore the American people's confidence in Congress and our national elections.

Here’s what Members of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) said upon passage:

“Members of Congress are entrusted by their constituents to speak on their behalf in Washington, D.C. As many Americans across the Nation are struggling to make ends meet, lawmakers should not be making millions of dollars on inside information and abusing their political power. The Stop Insider Trading Act is a commonsense, first step to ending a corrupt practice and restoring trust in the government,” said RSC Vice Chair Ben Cline.

“The American people should never have to wonder whether their elected officials are serving the country or their own investment portfolios. Public office is a public trust, and that trust must be earned every day. House Republicans passed the Stop Insider Trading Act to restore integrity and long-overdue accountability in Congress,” said Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15).

“The American people elect us to office with the trust needed to represent the interests of our local communities. But we betray this trust when elected officials leverage their position for personal financial gain. Today, the House took a significant step by passing Chairman Steil’s Stop Insider Trading Act,” said Rep. Morgan Griffith (VA-09).

“The American people deserve to know their elected officials are serving the public, not their own financial interests. Members of Congress should be held to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, and this legislation is an important step toward restoring trust in Congress,” said Rep.
