RSC Members Applaud President Trump's Move to Crack Down on Crime and Lawlessness in the Nation's Capital
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump announced a sweeping plan to end crime and lawlessness in Washington, D.C. for residents and millions of visitors. The White House announced the activation of the D.C. National Guard and the federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department to strengthen local law enforcement efforts and address crime in the District of Columbia.
For years, the nation’s capital has become a breeding ground for soft-on-crime policies that have emboldened criminals. Today’s action by President Trump to restore public safety within Washington, D.C. is another promise made and kept by his administration.
Members of the Republican Study Committee applauded the White House’s move to crack down on crime and lawlessness in the Nation’s Capital:
"For years, liberal soft-on-crime policies have devastated countless innocent families and individuals in our nation’s capital—with D.C. ranking among the most dangerous cities in America. Thankfully, these policies end now. I commend President Trump’s bold action in using his authorities to crack down on rampant crime and lawlessness in Washington, D.C. to make it safe again. Congress must support these efforts and stand ready to utilize our clear constitutional authority over D.C. if greater action is necessary to restore public safety," said RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11).
“Thanks to President Trump, we’re going to make D.C. safe again. Our federal employees deserve to feel safe walking to work and our fellow Americans visiting Washington deserve a clean, beautiful, and secure capital city where they can bring their families to learn our nation’s history in safety. You can’t have nice places to take your family, good businesses, or good jobs unless it’s safe. We will restore law and order so our capital reflects the greatness of the country it represents,” said Rep. Jimmy Patronis (FL-01).
“I commend President Trump’s bold action to restore safety and peace in our nation’s capital. Mobilizing the D.C. National Guard to tackle the rampant violent crime plaguing Washington is a decisive step toward making our capital an example of security and prosperity, as it should be. The alarming murder rate and recent attacks, like that on embassy staffers in May of this year, show the urgent need for this intervention. President Trump’s commitment to cleaning up the streets and ensuring federal workers and citizens can live and work without fear is exactly the leadership we need,” said Rep. Pat Fallon (TX-04).
“When North Carolinians visit Washington, D.C., they shouldn’t have to fear for their safety. I commend President Trump for working to restore law and order after years of failed Democrat leadership that turned our capital into one of the most dangerous cities in America. It’s time to make D.C. safe again,” said Rep. Tim Moore (NC-14).
“It’s unconscionable that it’s devolved into one of the most dangerous cities in the world with a top per capita murder rate. That’s finally going to change thanks to President Trump’s leadership and the dedication of our brave law enforcement officers. Law and Order is back," said Rep. Nick Langworthy (NY-23).
“Americans deserve better than murder rates higher than cartel-torn Colombia. D.C. is the capital of the greatest country in the world, but these numbers tell a different story. That changes today,” said Rep. Mark Harris (NC-08).
“Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies have jacked up the crime rate not only in our Nation’s Capital, but across the country. And with restrictive gun laws and rules preventing both citizens and law enforcement from responding to violence, the good guys’ hands have been tied. No more. President Trump is instituting common-sense policies to make the streets of our Nation’s Capital safe again, protecting Americans from senseless violence and sending a message to the rest of the world that here at home, lawlessness will not be tolerated,” said Rep. Dave Taylor (OH-02).
