WASHINGTON – Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Johnson (R-La.) released the following statement after Democrats blocked a measure that would have kept federal employees who have been disciplined for sexual misconduct from receiving a 2.6 percent pay increase:

"Today, House Democrats voted to reward individuals who have engaged in sexual misconduct with a pay raise. Thanks to their votes, those who have been disciplined for these behaviors will be given the same, across-the-board pay increase that their victims receive. By any objective measure, this is just wrong.

WASHINGTON – Republican Study Committee Chairman Mike Johnson (LA-04) released the following statement regarding President Trump's proposal to end the government shutdown:

"The situation at the southern border is a legitimate crisis, and Congress must act. Unfortunately, throughout the course of this shutdown, Democrats have refused to negotiate. At the same time, they also voted down measures that would have paid federal workers during the stalemate.

The task forces will generate conservative policy solutions for our nation's most pressing challenges.

WASHINGTON – Chairman Mike Johnson (R-La.) released the following statement regarding the prospect of declaring a national emergency to initiate construction of a southern border barrier:

"By any objective measure, the United States has a legitimate humanitarian and national security crisis at our southern border, and the president is correct and fully justified in demanding Congressional action to help resolve it. I fully support President Trump in making this a top priority. At the same time, while the president may have broad statutory powers under the National Emergencies Act to break this impasse, I believe he is wise to proceed very cautiously with the use of that power.

WASHINGTON – Today, newly elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put H.R. 21 (Making Appropriations for the Fiscal Year Ending September 30, 2019) on the House floor for a vote. The bill increases discretionary spending levels from the last fiscal year and repeals President Trump's "Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance" policy.

Additionally, Democrats also brought H.J. Res. 1 (Making further continuing appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security for fiscal year 2019) to the House floor. This bill does not provide the requested $5 billion in funding for a wall along the Southern border.

"Americans and President Trump overwhelmingly support work requirements. Leading on this issue might seem tough, but so is being trapped in poverty. It's time to show we truly care, and that means keeping the strong House-passed work requirements that bring hope and opportunity in the Farm Bill."
